    FAQ

Solar panels absorb the Sun’s energy throughout the day, converting it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses run on alternating current (AC) electricity. So, the panels’ DC electricity goes through an inverter to convert it to usable AC electricity. You can use that to power your house — or send it back to the electric grid for a credit.

Not directly. Instead, your savings come from reducing your hydro bill through a system called Net Metering. With Net Metering, most of your hydro bill can be offset, except for a small portion of the delivery fee.

Net Metering allows you to send surplus solar energy to the grid in exchange for credits you can use later. During the day, your home uses the solar power you generate and exchanges the surplus for a credit. At night or in the winter, when your panels may be covered with snow, you draw on those credits. This setup is the most cost-effective way to go solar in Ontario.

Yes! Batteries can Net Meter through a process called arbitrage, where you store inexpensive power during off-peak hours and send it to the grid during peak times. When adding batteries to a project, we adjust your solar system’s size to account for the battery’s arbitrage capabilities.

During an outage, your solar system must shut down to protect powerline workers. However, some inverters can create a closed-loop system or provide backup power from a battery, allowing your home to remain isolated from the grid. Ask your FIG consultant about our home backup solutions.

Studies have shown homes with solar energy systems sell for more than homes without. In most parts of Canada, a system will increase the value of your property more than a kitchen renovation. But your property value will only increase if you own (rather than lease) your system.

Yes! We offer demonstrations at our state-of-the-art office complex, featuring over 100 solar panels, multiple inverters, batteries, and even a solar-powered hot tub. Drop us a line!
